SUSANNE DUPPEN
visual art | photography

Susanne Duppen is a Dutch visual artist living in Berlin, Germany where she lives with her partner and two young children. Trained as an art teacher, she worked for several years in primary schools in Amsterdam and Berlin.

In 2022, she initiated Jouwja, an artist publication she self-published in November 2024. In this work, she visually analyzed her bond with her younger brother, Daan, who was born with multiple disabilities. The project reflects on their roles within the family, the question of support and the family as a structure with all its entanglements.
The work was rewarded as one of the 10 best photo books of 2024 by the Volkskrant, was shortlisted at the Athens Photofestival 2024, and received a publication grant from the Jaap Harten fonds.

In 2025, she began a new project with the working title Regenmens, following her participation in the PHmuseum Masterclass program that helped her get the project off the ground. Here, she observes and immerses herself in the unreserved nature of (her)children.

Her work tends to be conceptual, focusing on subjects that are close to her. A photograph often serves as the starting point for her work. She enjoys looking at and analyzing images, exploring the possibilities that fall both within and outside the frame.

Through her work, Susanne aims to offer a space for reflection, emphasizing shared experiences and connections, countering narratives of division with a focus on what unites.
